✦ Made specifically for your dog – each collar is crafted in-house to your dog’s exact measurements, giving a true custom fit rather than a “best guess” from standard size ranges.

Designed for medium to large dogs that pull – this reinforced D-end design positions the dee ring in front of the buckle so tension is placed through the doubled buckle section for added strength and stability. For this reason, this style is only available in 3/4" and 1" widths.

✦ Genuine BioThane® – waterproof, odour-resistant, and easy to clean, with the look and flexibility of leather but designed for everyday durability in all weather conditions.

✦ Optional integrated nameplate that lies flat – hand-stamped and riveted directly to the collar so it sits flush, resists tugging, and won’t swing or catch like dangling tags.

✦ Built for daily adventure – ideal for beach walks, muddy paddocks, swimming, and everyday wear without absorbing moisture or odours.

✦ Built to last, and supported for the long term – our hardware guarantee reflects our confidence in the quality of every component we use.

✦ Handcrafted in New Zealand by a small workshop – not mass-produced, not outsourced, but carefully made from start to finish with quality, comfort, and longevity in mind.

This waterproof BioThane® dog collar features a traditional working dog design with the dee ring positioned in front of the buckle for added strength. By directing pressure through the reinforced buckle section, the collar is designed to better handle the force created by strong dogs that pull on the lead or dogs that may occasionally need to be tied up.

The doubled strap construction through this section adds reinforcement while also helping keep the collar balanced and securely positioned during use.

Custom Fit
Each collar is custom made to your dog’s measurements for a comfortable, reliable fit. The buckle holes are carefully positioned around your dog’s neck measurement, while still allowing room for adjustment as needed.

Silent Nameplate
An optional solid brass or stainless steel nameplate can be securely attached to the collar with matching solid brass rivets. Your emergency contact details remain clearly visible without the noise or movement of dangling tags. Unlike laser engraving, hand-stamping creates a deeper, more distinctive impression designed to remain legible over time.

Materials & Craftsmanship

BIOTHANE®
BioThane® is a premium brand of coated webbing, created by bonding a PVC or TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) coating to a polyester or nylon core. The result is a strong, durable, and waterproof material that’s lightweight, easy to clean, and resistant to chewing and scratching.

We only use genuine BioThane® because of its proven quality and reliability – unlike cheaper alternatives on the market, it maintains its strength, finish, and performance over time.

HARDWARE
Premium hardware, cast from solid brass, selected for maximum strength to ensure our products remain rust-free for life. All hardware is kept securely in place with strong solid brass rivets.

Solid brass is a natural metal so our "gold" hardware may arrive with a little tarnish, especially when travelling snugly against leather. This is completely normal and easily polished – a quick wipe brings back the shine. Over time, brass also develops a warm, natural patina that many owners love. If you prefer hardware that stays bright without patina, you may like to choose our silver option instead (nickel-plated brass or stainless steel).

CRAFTSMANSHIP
Our dog collars are custom made with quality craftsmanship and thoughtful design that prioritises your dog's comfort and safety.

Our nameplates are hand-stamped. Minor tooling marks or inconsistencies in the stamping enhance the unique charm and human element of your custom dog collar.

Collar Width - Size Guide

Not sure what width collar your dog needs? Here’s a simple guide to help you choose the best fit for your dog — whether you’re after a soft puppy collar or something sturdy for a strong puller. We’ve included recommendations for both our leather dog collars and BioThane® dog collars so you can pick a width that’s comfy, practical, and looks great too.

Leather Dog Collars

Leather Dog Collar - Width Recommendations - Kinfolk Leather Custom Dog Collars NZ

As a general guide, we recommend that if your dog’s neck circumference is:

  • Less than 22cm (8.5”) or a puppy under 3 months old, choose a soft leather puppy collar.
  • 22 - 28cm (8.5 - 11”), choose a 1/2” leather collar.
  • 28 - 34cm (11 - 13”), choose a 3/4” leather collar.
  • 34 - 41cm (13 - 16”), choose a 1” leather collar.
  • 41 - 48cm (15 - 19”), choose a 1 1/4” leather collar.
  • 48cm (19”) and larger, choose a 1 1/2” leather collar.

BioThane® Dog Collars

The BioThane® range comes in widths of 1/2”, 3/4”, and 1”. Because BioThane® is stronger than leather, these widths are suitable for a wider range of neck sizes. When choosing a width, you can focus more on the look you prefer and the comfort of your dog, as the strength will be adequate regardless of the size.

BioThane Dog Collar Width Guide - Kinfolk Leather Custom Dog Collar NZ

  • 1/2” BioThane® Collar: Suitable for necks up to 35cm (14”).
  • 3/4” BioThane® Collar: Suitable for necks from 28cm (11") - 40cm (16").
  • 1” BioThane® Collar: Suitable for necks from 35cm (14") and beyond. This width is highly recommended for most medium and large dog breeds.

General Tips:

  • Wider collars are stronger, so please consider this when selecting the width. For example, do not use a 1/2” collar for a medium-sized dog; choose at least a 3/4” collar or larger.
  • For medium-sized breeds and larger dogs, especially those that have a habit of pulling on the lead, we highly recommend choosing one of our D-End Dog Collars. These collars provide an additional layer of leather to pull against when attaching a lead to the dee ring, offering extra strength and durability to handle stronger pulling.

If your dog has a history of being extremely tough on collars, such as, excessive pulling behaviour, we recommend using a specialty collar when attached to a leash or tie-out and keeping this BioThane dog collar for 'good'. While our collars are extremely sturdy, and will withstand forceful tugging, there are determined dogs out there for which any collar is no match!

Please see our Sizing Guide for recommended collar widths.

How To Measure Neck Size

Getting the size right means a better fit and a more comfortable collar for your dog. Here's how to measure your dog’s neck so we can make their collar just right - plus tips for growing puppies.

Dog Collar Measurement Guide - Kinfolk Leather Custom Dog Collars NZ

We strongly suggest providing an accurate measurement when placing your order. Old collars can stretch or sit differently, so measuring them often gives an inaccurate size - a quick neck measurement using the guide below will give the best fit.

1. Using a soft tape measure, record the circumference of the neck at the point where a collar would naturally lie. If you don’t have a tape measure, you can use a piece of string, ribbon, or strip of paper, then lay it flat against a ruler to measure the length.

2. Pull the tape so that it is snug but not tight - close enough that the collar will sit securely without slipping over the head, while still remaining comfortable for your dog. Record the measurement.

3. Enter this measurement in the personalisation text box when prompted. This measurement will be the middle hole of the collar, we will add at least another two holes either side.

Puppies - If your dog is a puppy, please let us know and we will make an allowance for growth when sizing the holes for the collar. Please feel free to give us a range (up to 12cm, i.e. 24-36cm) so that we can make sure there are enough holes to suit your dog's growth. We can be very flexible with the number of holes provided in the collar.
