Designed for dogs who need freedom to explore while remaining safely connected, our waterproof BioThane® Drag Line is ideal for recall training, tracking, scent work and adventures in open spaces.
Also known as a trailing long line, this style is intentionally made without a handle. The smooth, rounded end allows the line to trail more freely behind your dog, with less chance of a handle catching on grass, branches or other obstacles.
Each drag line is individually handcrafted in our New Zealand workshop using genuine BioThane® in your choice of length, width and colour, and finished with premium solid brass hardware in Gold, Silver or Matte Black.
Waterproof, easy to clean and resistant to absorbing odours, BioThane® is particularly well suited to muddy walks, wet weather and beach adventures. Simply rinse or wipe clean after use and it's ready for your next outing.
Optional Add-On
Personalised Nameplate – Add your dog's name and contact details with a hand-stamped solid brass or stainless steel nameplate.
The nameplate is available separately using the optional add-on above.
Materials & Craftsmanship
Materials & Craftsmanship
Each drag line is individually handcrafted in our New Zealand workshop using genuine BioThane® and premium solid brass hardware.
BioThane® is a strong polyester webbing with a durable, flexible coating, making it ideally suited to dog leads designed for active, everyday use.
All hardware is solid brass, with three finish options:
Gold – natural solid brass
Silver – nickel-plated solid brass
Matte Black – PVD-coated solid brass
Every drag line is cut, assembled and finished by hand to your chosen length, width, colour and hardware combination.
Dog Lead Length Guide
Dog Lead Length Guide
The best lead length depends on both your dog's size and your own height.
3ft (90cm) – A shorter lead for close control. Often suits larger or taller dogs, strong pullers, heel work and busy areas.
4ft (120cm) – A versatile everyday length that suits many dogs and handlers.
5ft (150cm) – Offers a little more freedom and is particularly useful for smaller or short-legged dogs, or taller handlers.
6ft (180cm) – Extra length for relaxed walks, loose-lead walking or dogs that benefit from more freedom.
Tip: Taller handlers and shorter dogs will generally be more comfortable with a longer lead, while a shorter lead provides more close control.
See the Dog Lead Length Guide in the image gallery for a visual comparison.
Long Lines
For training and exploring, our long lines are available in 3m, 5m, 7.5m, 10m and 15m lengths.
3m – A manageable step up from a standard walking lead, providing extra freedom while keeping your dog relatively close.
5m – A versatile choice for recall training and everyday exploring, with a good balance of freedom and manageability.
7.5m – A useful middle ground when you want more room to explore without the additional bulk of a 10m or 15m line.
10m – Provides plenty of freedom for recall training, sniffing and exploring larger open spaces.
15m – Best suited to situations where maximum range is useful, such as recall training, tracking and large open spaces. The additional length also means more lead to manage and carry.
When choosing a long line, consider both the amount of freedom you want to give your dog and how much line you are comfortable handling. Longer lines also become heavier, particularly in wider BioThane®.
Customisation Options
Customisation Options
LEAD WIDTH
Choose from two BioThane® widths depending on your dog's size and how you plan to use your trailing line.
½" (12mm): Lightweight and less bulky, making it a good choice for smaller dogs or when you want a lighter line trailing behind your dog. The difference becomes particularly noticeable with longer lengths, where there is less material and weight for your dog to trail.
Approx. BioThane® webbing break strength: 225kg
¾" (19mm): A wider, more substantial option suited to medium and larger dogs, or for owners who prefer a heavier, more substantial long line.
Approx. BioThane® webbing break strength: 340kg
Break-strength figures refer to the BioThane® webbing itself and are not a rated working load for the completed lead.
LEAD LENGTH
Choose from 3m, 5m, 7.5m, 10m or 15m. Longer lengths give your dog greater freedom to explore but also mean more line to manage and greater overall weight.
See our Long Line Length Guide in the image gallery for help choosing the right length.
COLOUR
Choose your BioThane® colour from our range of classic, bright and neutral shades.
HARDWARE FINISH
All of our hardware options are solid brass. Choose from:
Gold – natural solid brass
Silver – nickel-plated solid brass
Matte Black – PVD-coated solid brass
OPTIONAL ADD-ON
Personalised Nameplate – Add your dog's name and contact details with a hand-stamped solid brass or stainless steel nameplate.
The nameplate is available separately and can be added to your order using the optional add-on below the Add to Cart button.
Care Instructions
Care Instructions
BioThane® is waterproof and very easy to care for. Simply wipe clean with a damp cloth or rinse under fresh water after muddy, sandy or salty adventures. For a deeper clean, use warm water with a little mild soap, then rinse thoroughly.
Allow your drag line to air dry before storing.
Gold solid brass hardware will naturally develop a patina over time and can be polished if you prefer a brighter finish. Silver nickel-plated and Matte Black PVD-coated solid brass require no polishing; simply rinse and wipe clean.
After use in salt water, we recommend rinsing the entire lead and hardware thoroughly with fresh water.
As with all dog leads, regularly check the BioThane®, hardware and attachment points for signs of wear or damage before use.
Is this suitable for your pet?
Is this suitable for your pet?
Our BioThane® Drag Lines are designed for supervised training and exploring, including recall work, tracking and scent work, where the line can trail freely behind your dog while providing a way to regain control when needed.
The handle-free design helps reduce the chance of the end catching on grass, branches and other obstacles as your dog moves.
Drag lines should always be used under supervision and are not designed for tethering or leaving a dog tied up unattended.
For safety, take care to prevent the line from becoming wrapped around people, dogs or other obstacles, and avoid allowing your dog to run at full speed to the end of the line.
If your dog is prone to chewing through leads, a drag line should only be used while you are actively supervising them.
